I'll start to get things rolling.
remember in layer:02 when that random girl gets hit by the train that lain is on? and how lain suddenly transports outside to see the actual event occur? I think it represents how disattached we are from each other, especially when it comes to tragedies such as a cruel death. At first, the accident was seen as only an inconvenience, and for almost all the passengers on the train, that was all it was. But for lain, she sees the accident as the cruel and untimely death of a schoolgirl. Whenever I hear the local news on the TV somewhere and it talks about a murder or robbery, I always have this small voice telling me to not just see the victim as a headline, but another human like me, because for most people, they see hundreds of people every day and they shrug each other off as just temporary unimportant blips in their otherwise busy lives.
I know it might be kinda soykafty, and I might have missed some other imagery in that scene, but that's my take.

Isn't the transition between the inside and outside in that scene a shot of blood dripping from a powerline? I think that's probably of symbolic importance.
